This article gives you the basic structure on which to build your prompts from, with a number of generic and industry related examples to give you some ideas to support you in building prompts of your own.

Prompt structure

Your prompt must contain the following key parts:

  1. A Task
  2. Context
  3. Expectations
  4. Format

Let's see how this comes to fruition within an example prompt.


"Write a clear and concise set of instructions on how to assemble a flat-pack desk. The instructions should be suitable for a beginner and include a step-by-step guide with accompanying images. The format should be a numbered list with bullet points for each step."

Prompt examples

Let's explore some prompts that you could use as a starting point until you feel more confident in designing your own.

Generic prompts
· Using the uploaded notes only, generate the top 5 takeaways from this meeting. Please present them in a bullet-point list format.

· Give me some creative ideas to promote this information in a fun way to the team in our next face-to-face meeting. Please provide 3-5 ideas, including a brief description of each.

· Act as my critical friend and critique this text for spelling and grammar (UK English). Use your knowledge of [topic] to provide some counterarguments and suggest any further points that could strengthen my arguments. Please provide a detailed report with specific feedback and suggestions.

· You are my tutor. Summarise the chapter in the uploaded report into a succinct study guide using language that the average GCSE student would understand. Please provide a number of key points and examples which can be used as flashcards.
Research and Development prompts
· Produce a summary of the key findings of this the five most recent papers on diabetes in pregnancy using the British Medical Library and British Medical Journeys online sources only.

· Create a script for a 5 slide PowerPoint presentation that explains the reasons our board of directors should buy into this subject. Include supporting evidence from UK accredited FSA sites.

· Use the data in this excel file to identify key trends in company spending over the last quarter. Produce a 2-page report including charts to illustrate the key findings.

· Act like a product engineer and examine this document to check the dimensions calculated are accurate for the prototype being designed.
Human Resources prompts
· What are the key advantages and disadvantages of the health benefits offered from each of these insurance policies. Provide a comparison of all three, along with a conclusion indicating the one which is the best value per employee.

· Create a job description for an entry level Care Assistant. Use the company website, along with our current staff handbook, safeguarding and health and safety policy to create key requirements. Include essential duties and responsibilities in bullet points.

· Suggest how to structure an eLearning course to teach staff about health and safety in the warehouse. Provide a course outline, an aim and include learning objectives which can be evaluated by an assessment of their learning, which will require a pass rate of at least 80%.

· Create an itinerary for the senior management team to focus on whilst attending the upcoming Education conference. Include a schedule of key events and activities and any relevant materials or resources.
Project Management prompts
· What are the potential financial implications for a delay in meeting the service level agreement deadline? Provide a detailed analysis including relevant costs or penalties.

· List all of the deliverables in this project and provide the timeline to complete each one, with a 10% contingency. Include a Gantt chart to illustrate the project schedule.

· Compose an email to stakeholders providing an overview of the attached project. Include the projected costs for each phase as well as the resourcing required.

· Compare these bids, highlighting the pros and cons of each one. Provide a table or summary document, no more than 1 page.
Marketing and Communication prompts
· Analyse this content for its use of SEO, Make suggestions as to other SEO terms which we could use to promote this content.

· Create a 50-word messaging block to promote our brand on social media. Include emojis if relevant. Use an upbeat and conversational tone. Encourage engagement.

· How does the described solution address the customer pain points in this feedback survey? Create a detailed analysis, in a 3-column table form, with ‘Pain point’, ‘Solution Feedback’ them and ‘Further Suggestions as the column headings.’

· Simplify the section on best practices into a numbered list, with a brief explanation of each point.
Finance prompts
· Generate a report on the revenue and expenses for the last four quarters. Include charts and tables, where appropriate, to show trends or recommendations.

· How can I incorporate these ideas into a talk track for our sales team? Provide a step by step 1 page guide and highlight any recommended language.

· If you were the Chief Financial Officer, what three questions would you ask about this report in order to gain a deeper understanding of its implications and findings?

· What are some factors outlined in this document which could impact on buyers’ decisions? List these and provide a short explanation to support them.

When your response doesn’t quite match your expectations, you can ask more questions of the AI, to begin to make the answer more specific. You can also try rephrasing your original question.
